Michael Oliveira graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Bioengineering from the University of California Merced (UC Merced) in 2009 as part of the inaugural graduating class. While there, he participated in the University of California Leadership Excellence Through Advances Degrees (UC LEADS) program, a 2-year paid fellowship program to conduct research as an undergraduate. As part of the program, he participated in the UCSF Summer Research Training Program in 2007, conducting research in neuroimaging under the mentorship of Dr. Tracy Luks in the Department of Radiology. In 2008, he participated in the UCSD Summer Training Academy for Research in the Sciences Program, conducting research in neural engineering under the mentorship of Dr. Gabriel Silva in the Department of Bioengineering. During his academic years at UC Merced, he conducted research in vascular tissue engineering under the mentorship of Dr. Kara McCloskey in the School of Engineering. In 2009, his poster presentation took home one of three first place awards in the annual undergraduate research symposium at UC Merced.

He began his graduate work as a Ph.D student in the Department of Bioengineering in 2009-2010. He was awarded a NSF GRFP Honorable Mention in 2011. Under the mentorship of Dr. Hyle Park and in collaboration with the Department of Urology at the Loma Linda Medical Center, he is currently developing a laparoscopic multi-functional optical coherence tomography imaging system to serve as an intra-operative guidance tool for improved identification of the cavernous nerves during laparoscopic radical prostatectomy procedures. Accurate identification of these nerves during surgery can increase the rates of post-operative potency and continence in men who undergo this procedure as a surgical treatment for prostate cancer, thus improving their post-operative quality of life.

Michael Recieved his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of California Riverside in 2014.
